Depth of Gastir Cancer: Evaluation by Abdominal Ultrasound

|
In order to determine the depth of gastric cancer by transabdominal ultrasonography, 17 patients with gastric cancer were evaluated preoperatively and compared with histologic findings in the operative specimen. Ultrasonography was done atter
ingestion
of 500 mL tap water using a commercially available ultrasound equipment with 3.5 MHz transducers. Using the intact middle hyperechoic layer on sonograms as the criterion for early cancer, all II cases of advanced cancer were diagnosed as advanced
cancer
and five of six cases of early cancer were diagnosed as early cancer. Five of six cases of early cancer showed a thickness of lesions below 10 mm. We believe that transabdominal sonography is a valuable method in differentiation between early and
advanced gastric cancer.
